Worm Box 5-Tray Composting System

Meet the Worm Box™ 5-Tray Composting System

Uncle Jim’s been raising worms since 1976. We don’t put our name on just anything. When we found a composting system that could handle serious volume without taking over your space, we knew it was worth it.

This is vermicomposting the way it’s supposed to work — five full trays, 12 gallons of capacity, and worms doing what they’ve always done best. Your kitchen scraps go in. Rich, living compost comes out. No smell. No heavy lifting. No outdoor pile to babysit.

Here’s the Deal

You’ve got vegetable peels, coffee grounds, cardboard, and fruit scraps hitting your trash every single day. Every one of those things is a meal to a red wiggler. And what a red wiggler leaves behind is the richest, most plant-ready fertilizer on earth — worm castings — plus liquid fertilizer (worm tea) that drains right out the built-in spigot at the base.

Traditional composting takes months and a lot of space. This system has your worms producing finished compost in weeks. The difference is the worms — and five working trays that keep the cycle going continuously.

Scraps go in. Compost comes out. Repeat forever.

Worm Box assembled system

Big Capacity. Small Footprint.

Twelve gallons across five working trays — and the whole thing stacks vertically, so it takes up roughly the same floor space as a small trash can. Tuck it in the kitchen, basement, garage, or out on the patio. Works anywhere you’ve got a few square feet.

Built from durable PP plastic that handles years of moisture and worm activity without cracking or falling apart on you.

How the 5-Tray System Works

  1. Start feeding your worms in the bottom tray
  2. When it’s full, add a new tray on top with fresh scraps
  3. Worms migrate upward toward the food — naturally
  4. Lower trays finish composting into pure castings
  5. Harvest finished compost with no worm sorting required

Once it’s running, the system takes care of itself. You just keep feeding it.

No Smell — Seriously

Proper worm composting doesn’t stink, and this system is designed to keep it that way. Ventilated airflow keeps decomposition efficient, and the closed design contains any odors. Stick to fruit scraps, vegetables, coffee grounds, and paper. Avoid meat, dairy, and oily foods — and you won’t have any issues.

Harvest Liquid Gold

As your  composting worms work, excess moisture drains into the base. That liquid is worm tea — nutrient-dense, microbe-packed, and absolutely loved by plants. Drain it with the built-in spigot, dilute it about 1:10 with water, and feed your garden. You’ll see the difference.

Get Started with Uncle Jim’s Worms

For best results, start with at least 1,000 Red Wigglers. We recommend 2,000 for faster processing. These are the same composting worms raised right here on Uncle Jim’s Pennsylvania farm — healthy, active, and ready to get to work. Bundle options are available so you can get everything in one shipment.

This system is a great fit for families with heavy kitchen waste, home gardeners, apartment dwellers with limited space, raised bed growers, schools, and anyone who’s been wanting to start composting but didn’t know where to begin.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

1. How many worms do I need to get started?

For a system this size, we recommend starting with at least 1,000 Red Wigglers, but 2,000 worms is ideal if you want faster results right out of the gate. More worms = quicker composting and a more efficient system from day one.

2. Will this compost bin smell inside my home?

No — when used properly, there should be little to no odor. Vermicomposting doesn’t rot the way traditional compost piles do. As long as you stick to worm-friendly foods (fruit, veggies, coffee grounds, paper) and avoid meat, dairy, and oily scraps, your Worm Box will stay clean and odor-free.

3. How long does it take to make compost?

Under normal conditions, you can start seeing usable compost in as little as 4–6 weeks. Full tray turnover depends on how much you feed your worms and how many worms you start with — but once the system gets going, it becomes a continuous cycle of compost production.

4. Can I use this indoors or does it have to stay outside?

Both! The Worm Box is designed for indoor or outdoor use. Many customers keep it in kitchens, basements, or laundry rooms. It also works great on patios, in garages, or in sheds — just keep it out of extreme heat or freezing temperatures.

5. Is this system good for beginners?

Absolutely. The 5-tray design actually makes composting easier for beginners, not harder. The natural upward movement of worms separates finished compost for you, so there’s no complicated sorting. If you can feed your worms and follow a few simple guidelines, you can run this system successfully.
