One worm order, many ways to use it

Composters love them first. Everyone else finds more uses.

Most customers choose European Nightcrawlers for indoor bins and outdoor compost piles because they want help turning scraps, leaves, bedding, and organic matter into worm-worked material. The bonus is that Super Reds are also useful in garden and lawn soil, easy to keep for fishing, and handy as live food for many pets.

Indoor composters

Kitchen scraps meet their match.

Add them to a prepared worm bin with damp bedding and a modest food supply. Set them on top, cover them, and let them naturally move down instead of stirring them in.

Outdoor compost piles

Drop the crew where the feast is.

Place worms on top of moist compostable material, cover them with the blanket, cardboard, newspaper, or leaves, and let them travel downward into the pile on their own.

Garden and lawn soil

Loosen, release, cover, relax.

For soil release, loosen a small 12 in. x 12 in. area, add the worms, and cover with the jute blanket or another breathable cover so they can naturally integrate.

Bait and pet food

Big, lively worms with bonus uses.

European Nightcrawlers are popular with anglers and live-food customers because they are active, useful, and easy to keep when given cool, moist bedding.

Inside the 2,000 count kit

European Nightcrawlers thriving in compost

A compost pile can get exciting.

Give your worms moisture, shade, bedding, and food scraps, then let them do the quiet work below the surface. That is the Uncle Jim’s kind of garden entertainment.

Natural Jute Fiber Worm Blanket

The free blanket is not fluff. It is useful.

Use the Natural Jute Fiber Worm Blanket as a breathable cover over your bin, compost pile, or release zone. It helps keep the area darker, more protected, and more worm-friendly while they settle in.

Do this when they arrive

Open, moisten, cover, and let the worms move down naturally.

The easiest setup is also the gentlest setup. Do not dump them into dry heat, do not stir them aggressively, and do not bury them deep. Give them moisture, shade, a little food if needed, and a breathable cover.

Right away

Check the travel bag gently.

Open the package promptly and check the moisture. If the bag seems dry, add a small splash of water right away. The goal is damp, not soaked.

You may add a tiny dash of oatmeal, corn meal, or another grain-type medium as a light welcome snack. Keep it small at first so the worms can adjust without excess food heating or souring.

Garden, lawn, or soil

Make a cozy 12 in. x 12 in. landing zone.

Loosen a small area of soil about 12 inches by 12 inches. Gently dump the worms on the loosened area, then cover them with the Natural Jute Fiber Worm Blanket, cardboard, newspaper, leaves, or another breathable cover.

Do not mix them in. Let them naturally move down into their new home.

Compost bins and piles

Place them on top and cover.

For indoor composters and outdoor compost piles, add the worms to the top of prepared, moist bedding or compost material. Cover them with the jute blanket, damp cardboard, damp newspaper, or leaves.

Do not mix them through the bin or pile. They will naturally move down when the environment feels right.

European Nightcrawler FAQ

Everything you need to know before your worms arrive

❓ What’s the difference between European Nightcrawlers and Red Wigglers?

Euros are bigger, beefier, and tunnel deeper than red wigglers. Red wigglers stay near the surface and are pure compost specialists. Euros do both — they’ll compost like champs AND work your garden soil at depth. Plus they make killer fishing bait. Think of red wigglers as compost-only and Euros as the do-it-all worm.

❓ How do I take care of them when they arrive?

Open the bag in a shaded spot and let the worms breathe for an hour or two. Transfer them into pre-moistened bedding (shredded cardboard, coco coir, or peat moss work great) and add some food scraps a day or two later. Keep the bedding damp like a wrung-out sponge — not soaked.

❓ What do European Nightcrawlers eat?

Fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, crushed eggshells, shredded cardboard, leaves, and aged manure. Avoid: meat, dairy, oily foods, citrus, onions, garlic, and anything spicy or salty. Chop scraps small for faster eating.

❓ What temperature do they need?

Euros thrive between 55–75°F, but they’re cold-hardier than red wigglers and can handle dips into the 40s. They’ll slow down in extreme cold and can overheat above 85°F, so keep bins out of direct sun in summer.

❓ Can I put them directly in my garden?

Absolutely — Euros do great in outdoor garden beds, raised beds, and around fruit trees. Make sure the soil has plenty of organic matter (compost, mulch, leaves) for them to eat. They’ll burrow down, aerate your soil, and leave nutrient-rich castings behind as they go.

❓ How fast do they reproduce?

Under good conditions, an adult Euro can produce a cocoon every 7–10 days, and each cocoon hatches 1–3 baby worms after about 6–8 weeks. Your 2,000 starter colony can double or triple within a few months if they’re well-fed and happy.

❓ How big of a bin do I need for 2,000 worms?

A 2,000 count colony needs roughly 6–10 square feet of surface area to live comfortably. A standard worm bin, a large tote (around 18 gallons), or a sectioned-off corner of an outdoor bed all work great. They expand to fit their space — give them more room and they’ll grow into it.

❓ Are they good for fishing?

Some of the best. Euros are bigger and tougher than red wigglers, stay lively on the hook longer, and handle cooler water better — making them a favorite for bass, panfish, trout, walleye, and catfish. A 2,000 count order can stock your bait fridge for an entire season.

❓ How are they shipped?

Your Euros ship in a breathable bag with moist bedding to keep them comfortable in transit. Orders go out promptly and are packed for the season — we don’t ship to extreme heat or cold zones that would put the worms at risk. Live arrival is guaranteed.

❓ What if some don’t make it?

We stand behind every order with our live arrival guarantee. If you have a problem with your shipment, contact us with photos and we’ll make it right.
